The sports giants in European football have been particularly aggressive in crypto engagement this past week, with analysts such as Deloitte and Nielsen predicting an increase in crypto and blockchain sports sponsorship spending for years to come. FC Barcelona and Manchester City led the charge in sports titles around Crypto this week, but for two completely different reasons.

FC Barcelona’s Metaverse Play

We’ve seen FC Barcelona refer to crypto and blockchain titles for years – the club was an early mover of fan tokens, and more recently, it enjoyed the likes of Polkadot and Binance in the vicinity of the once open jersey sponsorship.

In Coach K’s final game, the Duke basketball NFT quickly sold out

Duke basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski is the ‘face of college basketball’ and of course a Duke icon. Despite the two-day open window, it took less than two hours for the NFT platform OneOf to sell 1,000 NFT representing Duke basketball tickets commemorating Coach K’s final. Despite losing to rival North Carolina, the NFT drop was apparently a win for all parties – especially OneOf, as it was the platform’s first collegiate basketball game.

Nielsen reports: Blockchain sports sponsorship to reach $ 5B by 2026

A new overview from media data and analytics firm Nielsen shows that blockchain and crypto sports sponsorship costs will exceed $ 5B – about 8X from last year’s cost – in 2026. Nielsen sees many evolutionary factors, from consumer interests and engagements to emerging ones. Growing legitimate players on media platforms and crypto, everyone contributes to this growth. Crypto and blockchain firms had the highest percentage increase in sports sponsorship spending last year compared to the previous year.
